Here are 15 types of trim that you should know about for your next remodeling project
To complete any type of remodeling project, it is important to find the right type of trim. Make sure you are familiar with the terminology and available trim options for your project.
Bare Wood
When you start a trim project, you will have to decide which types of trim you want. Lowe’s glossary provides a great place to find out the various types of trim. These include bare, primed, medium-density fibreboard, polystyrene, and PVC trim. If you plan to stain the wood or give it a natural appearance, you can use bare wood. You have many options when it comes to wood type.
Primed Wood
Primed wood trim may be less expensive because you can use cheaper wood and use finger joints. This allows you to join shorter lengths of wood. You will have less headaches with primed wood than with barewood. Primed wood can be installed faster because you don’t have to wait until the primer dries. Primed trim makes it easier to spot any defects or nail holes, and can be filled before applying the final coats. It is even easier to handle primed trim due to the contrast between the painted and raw wood. This gives you a clear profile line to follow. Don’t buy wood that isn’t ready to be painted.
Fiberboard Medium Density
It’s the most economical option for trim. Medium-density fibreboard is popular. But it comes with its own set problems. MDF is not able to perform in humid, wet environments. MDF (medium density fiberboard), which is a cheap and great material for painting trim, should only be installed in a dry area. It’s a disaster if you place it on the floor, near windows or where moisture or condensation can collect. MDF will quickly absorb paint, expand and shed it. Avoid using MDF in areas that are likely to get wet.
Polystyrene
You can choose from a variety of trim materials, including polystyrene.
Polyurethane
Due to its built, polyurethane trim will not remodeling project deteriorate. Polyurethane can be painted and cut just like wood. It is also lighter than wood. Polyurethane trim can be used in the same way as wood. You cut it using standard saw blades, nail or use a gun to attach it and then paint it like wood. The polyurethane trim available in home centers is limited. Search online for “polyurethane trimming” to find a wide range of options (some products are labeled as “urethane”, others as “polyurethane”.
PVC Trim
Because of its resistance to sunlight and ability to keep paint in place, PVC-azek trim looks great as an exterior trim option. It is very similar to wood and can be used in areas that are prone to water. PVC trim costs about the same as knot-free hardwood. PVC trim is becoming a popular interior trim option.
Wood Composite
Wood composite trim is composed of wood fibers as well as phenolic and wax resins. They can be cut as wood and are factory primed. For exterior trim that resembles wood, you can also use wood composite trim. Because it is more durable than exterior wood, and lasts longer, you will save both time and money.
Casing: Specific to the Area
Casing can be described as the trim that is used around exterior and interior windows or doors. Casing covers the space between walls, door or window frames. It is usually two to three inches in length.
Baseboards
Baseboards, also known as wall base molding, are trim applied to the walls at the floor’s bottom. Baseboards (also known as wall base molding) cover the joint of the wall and floor. They are available in a variety designs. It’s not easy to find the right trim for your house, whether it’s vinyl or hardwood.
Crown Molding
Crown molding covers corners between ceilings or walls. It is difficult to install as it comes in at a steep angle. Cornice moldings, also known by the name crown molding, is another name for it. While it’s not always remodeling project necessary, it can add an artistic flair to a home.
Chair Rail

Picture Rail
Picture rails are great for older homes as they allow you to hang picture frames from the walls without drilling holes. It is also great for homeowners who may not be able to hang pictures on the walls.
Wainscoting
Wainscoting refers to wood paneling that is placed against a wall. It is similar in appearance to a chairrail, but it is different. Wainscoting can be found in foyers, staircases and dining rooms. Wainscoting panels extend almost from the walls to the floor. Chair rail is only a horizontal rail that runs along the wall.
Wall Frame Molding
While wall frame molding can look similar to a picture frames, it is often larger. These wall frames can be found in Georgian or Neoclassical homes. They usually are located in hallways and stairways as well as in living rooms and dining rooms. It can be time-consuming to work with trim.
Plate Rail
A plate rail can be used as a platform for storing a collection of items, such as pottery or containers. It is just one type of trim.
